Dr. Charles (Chuck) Hopkins, York University (Toronto) Senior Advisor to UNESCO's Educating for a Sustainable Future Working Group, will be speaking on


The lecture should be of interest to a wide range of faculty and students including those working in Science, Education and across the social sciences and who are concerned with their role in 'well being for all' and 'a local to global' perspective. The University of Regina, as one of the signatory partners of the UN University Regional Centre of Expertise Saskatchewan, has become involved in several initiatives leading to a more sustainable institution.

Please come, listen and interact with a world-renown figure who has received many awards for his dedicated work on behalf of environmental sustainability.

Light refreshments and an opportunity to "Meet and Greet" Chuck will follow the lecture.

Hello Everyone,

You are cordially invited to a social night with Dr. Chuck Hopkins, holder of the UNESCO Chair at York University (see attached biography). The event will take place Thursday, March 22, at Bushwakker’s Brewing Company, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm, come and go.  The atmosphere will be relaxed and informal.  The basement room has been reserved for the event.  The stairwell to the basement is at the back of the pub.  Bushwakker's is located at 2206 Dewdney Avenue.

Come out, dine, and socialize with other RCE members and say hello to Chuck. Chuck will be returning home to Toronto the next day after a having had a busy week in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council Spring 2012 Forum, April 19-20, Regina

Good morning, just a reminder about our Spring 2012 Forum, "Bringing About a Titanic Shift", on April 19 and 20 at the Travelodge Hotel in Regina.  Cut-off for hotel reservations is March 26 and can be made at (306) 586-3443.   This spring's forum features:

  • keynote speaker Helen Spiegelman, speaking on "Making the Titanic Shift to Extended Producer Responsibility"
  • a workshop on the Art & Science of On-Line Markting Strategy
  • a tour of the RCMP training academy and food waste composting program
  • sessions on Household Hazardous Waste, Agricultural Plastics, Product Stewardship, and more.
  • Captain John Smith (aka Wayne MacDonald, U of A) describing the events on that fateful night 100 years ago when the unthinkable happened to the unsinkable. Wayne was a long-time friend of one of Titanic's survivors, and has collected memorabilia for 58 years, and has some fascinating stories to tell of this terrible disaster.

Gardening Using Native Saskatchewan Plants, March 15, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m., Regina

With spring just around the corner it’s a great time to explore interesting ways to highlight your landscape using plants that thrive
in Saskatchewan. Join Fidji Gendron, Assistant Professor of Biology at First Nations University and Sarah Vinge, Habitat Stewardship
Coordinator for Nature Saskatchewan, for a presentation on gardening using native Saskatchewan plants. Gendron and Vinge will explain how people can obtain native Saskatchewan species and how to design, prepare and maintain a native plant garden.

Travelling World Community Film Festival, March 29-April 1, Regina


You are invited to the Travelling World Community Film Festival held in Regina from March 29-April 1 2012.   

Twenty four films on Human Rights, Social Justice and the Environment will be screened. A schedule and a description of the films are attached to this e-mail.
