Please see below the email request received from the School of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Saskatchewan sent to the RCE.--Roger

As a partner organization of The School of Environment and Sustainability, we thought that you may be interested in an upcoming event called EcoHack 2018an environment/sustainability themed hackathon, with challenges sourced from local organizations such as yours.

Taking place November 23rd-25th, EcoHack will be an immersive multi-day experience for our students to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams. They will use rapid-iteration design to generate solutions to environmental and sustainability themed challenges that are identified locally – these are real solutions to real local challenges. I’ve attached the community partner information package to give you a sense of the time commitment involved.

We are currently in the process of finding community partners to identify environmental/sustainability challenges or ideas and would like to extend this opportunity to your organization. We would appreciate the submission of your challenge before November 1st.

Challenges can be submitted online here, or you are welcome to email our event lead, Liz Kuley, at Acting as a community partner requires no financial commitment, although our community partners are welcome to sponsor the event in addition to providing us with a sustainability challenge. Community partners will be asked to:

  • give a two to five minute “challenge statement” to participants on Friday evening
  • attend a question period after this presentation where participants can ask them (or a representative) questions about the proposed challenge
  • on Saturday, community partners are welcome to pop in to see the progress that students are making towards a solution to their proposed challenge, and to offer mentorship
  • on Sunday, partners are welcome to join us for dinner and to watch the teams give a 2-5 minute demonstration/pitch (dinner will be provided and tickets to this event are available to the representative of community partners for free, but are otherwise $20 and go on sale October 15th).

We are looking for challenges from a wide array of industries and of various types. Some examples of currently submitted challenged are:

  • How can we avoid using tape/chemical adhesives when shipping orders across North America?
  • How can we locally recycle or reduce the use of soft plastics since we can no longer recycle it in blue bins?
  • Who has a role to play in supporting green building projects in our community? And what can these stakeholders do to make it easier for green building projects to be successfully completed?

EcoHack 2018 is being organized by a cross campus team including the Office of Sustainability, the Undergraduate Environmental Programs Office (myself), the College of Engineering, and is championed by Dr. Irena Creed, the Executive Director of the School of Environment and Sustainability. This event is currently sponsored by the Saskatchewan Environmental Society, the National Science and Engineering Research Council, and the University of Saskatchewan.

Please feel free to share this with those in your network who would benefit from this opportunity, and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Warm Regards,

Liz Kuley
